Wuthering Heights opens next week

It’s just one week until Wuthering Heights opens at West Yorkshire Playhouse to kick off our autumn tour. This is a very special piece from our repertoire, being the first original full-length ballet created for the Company by our Artistic Director David Nixon OBE. This will be the first time in over 10 years that the ballet has been performed in Leeds, just miles from Emily Brontë’s original setting.

Meet our new Dance Education Apprentice

My name is Ebony Godridge and I am the new Dance Education Apprentice at Northern Ballet. I recently graduated with a BA (Hons) Dance degree from Leeds Beckett University and I’m hoping I can bring the skills I have learnt from my degree to the Learning team, to help plan workshops and projects. My main role as apprentice will be to support and assist our Dance Education Officers in the many workshops and projects that they deliver. This includes the START Project, Ability, and audience development workshops for the children’s ballets.

I am excited about visiting all the different schools and communities where workshops take place and to work with a range of people. I’m especially looking forward to working with primary schools to see how the Dance Education Officers run the sessions there, as this is an age group that I could potentially see myself working with in the future. I am also looking forward to start working with Artistic Learning Manager Sophie Alder on Ability, a dance course specifically designed for adults with learning disabilities. I have never worked with people with additional needs before, so it will be a new challenge for me, but I’m excited to gain new skills, to get to know the participants and to start working with them to see what we create.

My first week as the new apprentice flew by, and I felt that I learnt a great deal about the Learning department itself and what they do. I read up on past projects which gave me ideas for possible new ones, as I will be planning and delivering my own project towards the end of my apprenticeship.

During my second week, I supported the Summer School for children aged 7-11. This was a great week as I was able to observe how the dance artists work and help the children in their creative tasks. It was a jam packed week, full of music and dance. All the children said they had fun and I did too!

Three world premières - one fantastic year

We are delighted to announce that we will be premièring three brand new ballets in 2017.

We will be kicking off the year with the world première of Kenneth Tindall’s Casanova at Leeds Grand Theatre from 11 – 18 March 2017. Casanova will tour to 8 venues across the UK until May 2017.

If that’s not enough, we are also adapting John Boyne’s bestselling novel The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, choreographed and directed by Northern Ballet Artistic Associate Daniel de Andrade. The ballet tells the story of an unlikely friendship between two young boys, which blossoms through the disturbing events of World War II. The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas will be premièred at Cast in Doncaster from 25 – 27 May, before touring across the UK to 9 venues, including the West Yorkshire Playhouse, until October 2017.

Just in time for the festive season, our final new ballet of 2017 will be the much-loved Hans Christian Andersen fairytale The Little Mermaid, choreographed by Artistic Director David Nixon OBE. This production will première at Southampton Mayflower Theatre from 21 – 23 September and will tour to 8 venues across the UK until December 2017, culminating in our annual Christmas run at Leeds Grand Theatre.

2017 is going to be a big year for Northern Ballet and you are sure to find a performance near you. We hope to see you at one of our new ballets – if not two or even all three!

Northern Ballet to create three new ballets in 2017

$
0
0
Press release date:
Thu 15 Sep 2016

Northern Ballet is to create a record three new full-length ballets for 2017. Following the previously announced World Première of Casanova in March 2017, Northern Ballet is also to adapt John Boyne’s bestselling novel The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, followed by Hans Christian Andersen’s fairytale The Little Mermaid. Northern Ballet will perform at a combined total of 22 venues across the UK with these new ballets.

Telling the story of an unlikely friendship blossoming through the disturbing events of World War II, The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas will be choreographed and directed by Northern Ballet’s Artistic Associate Daniel de Andrade who most recently created full-length ballet Nijinsky – God of the Dance for Slovak National Theatre as well as shorter works for Northern Ballet including Fatal Kiss and children’s balletElves & the Shoemaker. The ballet will première at Cast in Doncaster from 25 – 27 May 2017 before touring to Wolverhampton, Leicester, Richmond, Aylesbury, Stoke, Bromley, Leeds and Hull (part of the city’s UK City of Culture celebrations) until September 2017. It will feature an original score by Oscar-nominated composer Gary Yershon, sets and costumes designed by Mark Bailey, lighting by Tim Mitchell and Dramatic Coach Patricia Doyle also joins the creative team.

Based on the famous fairytale by Hans Christian Andersen, The Little Mermaid tells the story of a young mermaid who is willing to give up everything she knows in a search for love and the desire to gain a human soul. The Little Mermaid will be choreographed by Northern Ballet’s Artistic Director David Nixon OBE whose most recent creations for the Company include Cinderella, The Great Gatsby and Beauty & the Beast. This new production will première in Southampton at the Mayflower Theatre from 21 – 23 September 2017 before touring to Norwich, Newcastle, Nottingham, Canterbury, Woking, Sheffield and Leeds until December 2017. Details of the creative team are to be announced.

David Nixon OBE, Artistic Director at Northern Ballet, said: ‘2017 will be an exemplary example of Northern Ballet’s commitment to continuing to create new work and contributing to the dynamic UK dance scene. With an unprecedented three new full-length ballets in one year, I am delighted that we will be presenting audiences with such a diverse range of new productions. As a company of talented dance actors Northern Ballet is in a privileged position to be able to adapt so many different works and continue to challenge the idea of what stories can be told through dance.

The Little Mermaid is an enchanting story and the fantastical underwater world of the mermaids evokes such beautiful imagery that it will be an excellent addition to our repertoire. So many people have grown up with an awareness of this classic tale and so I am looking forward to introducing audiences to the world beyond the waves.’

Daniel de Andrade said: ‘I am absolutely delighted to have the opportunity to create my first full-length ballet for Northern Ballet. The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas is a fascinating and eloquent story shining the spotlight on atrocious historical events from a perspective of complete naivety. Although the tale of Bruno and Shmuel is heart-breaking, their friendship throughout the story shows the purity of the human spirit in the face of absolute adversity.’
